Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park

This park features some of the steepest cliffs and oldest rock in North America. The Black Canyon in western Colorado is so named because its walls are often shrouded in shadow, creating a somber and mysterious atmosphere.

Some parts of the canyon are so deep and narrow that they receive only 33 minutes of sunlight a day. 

  1. The park has two rims with no bridge connecting them; they are a 2-hour drive apart.

  2. The canyon is deeper than it is wide.

  3. Hiking in the canyon requires a wilderness permit.
